As the gateway to the north within Darebin, Northcote has always been a place of connection and diversity. Through this project, we aim to combat the graffiti epidemic by transforming our precinct with beautiful public art that honours our multicultural history, our present, and our future.

Through storytelling, history tours, and art, this initiative will strengthen community identity, pride, and the unique character of Northcote Rise.

With grant support, the Northcote Business Association will deliver a sustainable, creative initiative that strengthens community pride and positions Northcote Rise as a hub of culture for years to come. This project has been funded through the State Government’s Multicultural Business Precinct Revitalisation Program with support from Darebin Council.

Northcote Portraits will deliver a series of up to 20 small to medium sized vibrant, permanent street artworks across the Northcote Rise precinct.

Each work will be paired with storytelling that reflect the people, cultures, histories and lived experiences that shape our community. This project has been developed in response to ongoing community interest in both celebrating local identity and addressing graffiti through creative community-driven solutions.

The project will be delivered in collaboration with the Victorian State Government, Darebin Council, the Northcote Business Association and local artist Grace West and completed prior to Christmas 2026.
