Trader Spotlight: Rathdowne Records
For the past decade, Rathdowne Records has been a cornerstone of Northcote Rise, delighting all kinds of music lovers at 230 High Street.
The journey began for owner Joel 16 years ago as a humble video store with a small music section in Carlton North. As gentrification set in, Joel knew it was time to move to Northcote, Melbourne’s vibrant music hub, where vinyl was surprisingly underserved.
Joel’s passion for high-quality music on vinyl led him to bring back a crate of records from a fateful overseas trip. Meeting renowned jazz dealers at Camberwell Market further fuelled his inspiration.
Today, Rathdowne Records is your ultimate destination for all music tastes, specialising in jazz but offering a vast array of genres including Japanese, folk, funk, soul, rock, soundtracks, and hip-hop.
But it’s not just about Vinyl.
There is resident fluffy DJ Tessa, the gorgeous and super friendly schnauzer who calls Rathdowne Records her second home.
And of course there’s the in-store events where local bands and DJs perform, creating a Jazz Kissa-style environment complete with food, drinks, and great vibes. These events pay homage to the rich jazz culture, making every visit a unique experience.
Joel and Rathdowne Records are integral to the fabric of Northcote Rise, embodying the street’s organic, authentic spirit. So, whether you’re a seasoned collector, a vinyl newbie, or just curious to see what’s spinning, head on down to Rathdowne Records.
And don’t forget to say hi to the famous Tessa while you’re there!
