Trader Spotlight: Birch & Bear
For an impressive 18 years, Birch & Bear has been a beloved fixture on High Street, Northcote. Having found their permanent home at 287 High Street for the past 14 years, this charming shop is the brainchild of sisters Donna and Kim.
Their journey began with end-of-school-term get-togethers, where they made and sold handcrafted items at local markets. After years of felting, crafting, and collaborating with other artisans, they decided to transition from the cold, windy markets of Melbourne to their dream shop on High Street.
Birch & Bear is a treasure trove of lovingly made, eco-friendly items. Initially, their dad often helped create some of the beautiful products you see in the store. Today, they work with a team of independent makers and source specialty items that are eco-friendly and slow-made.
The shop offers a delightful array of felting, crochet, knitting, sewing, embroidery, woodwork, and pattern making, using natural and sometimes recycled materials. Donna and Kim are passionate about upcycling, transforming old objects and materials into something new and unique.
While they focus on children’s products, Birch & Bear also caters to adults with a range of leather bags and journals, candles, beanies, and other crafty items.
Birch & Bear is more than just a store; it’s a heartfelt expression of creativity and community. Donna and Kim’s dedication to craftsmanship and creating magic fits perfectly with the vibrant spirit of Northcote Rise. They are grateful to be part of a community that values humanity and care, reflecting the wonderful local traders and residents.
Come visit Birch & Bear for a truly unique shopping experience and find something special made with love and care.
